Heroic Indian Pilot Thwarts Mid-Air Disaster on Tel Aviv-Bound Flight
TEL AVIV / NEW DELHI:1 Oct

A routine Flydubai flight turned into a high-altitude nightmare after a violent cockpit confrontation, averted only by extraordinary courage and a desperate struggle led by Indian Captain Smit Machchhar.
Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with mostly Israeli passengers on board, was forced to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following the severe security incident.
According to official briefings and media reports, the crisis unfolded as the Boeing 737 approached its destination. The co-pilot—an Omani national—reportedly launched a sudden knife attack on Captain Machchhar and attempted to sabotage flight systems, plunging the aircraft into a terrifying, rapid dive.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machchhar fought back fiercely and managed to crack open the cockpit door. This vital act allowed alert passengers and crew members to rush inside, overpower the attacker, and help stabilize the aircraft before it could crash.
Both pilots were hospitalized following a safe emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, with Indian officials confirming that Captain Machchhar is in a stable condition.
The incredible act of bravery has drawn widespread international praise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Indian captain as a “hero,” while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly commended the crew, stating, “I salute these heroes who showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster.”
The harrowing incident has prompted authorities to order heightened security measures across Israeli and foreign carriers operating in the region.
